1904 - 89 born Leipzig, Germany and studied at Dresden and Munich, where
he met Kandinsky . He moved to Paris in 1926 and became one of the most
successful artists of the École de Paris, evolving a calligraphic,
linear style. This he employed both in his paintings (generally simply
numbered rather than titled) and later in wire sculptures. Alongside
astronomy and psychology, Hartung developed an interest in
‘Expressionism’, and in 1922 completed a series of untitled, abstract
watercolours (Antibes, Foundation Hans Hartung). |
