1937,
Bradford. Hockney had formal training at Bradford College of Art,
and then the Royal College, when his painting began to attract the
attention of critics and collectors. He was associated with the
Pop Art movement but in his experimentation with different styles he
showed an astonishing originality. In 1963 he visited the U. S. A.
which led to his series of etchings "The Rakes Progress". His
printing career took off after he visited California when he worked at
the studios of Gemini GEL in making remarkable etchings and lithographs
which included meticulous portraiture, still life's and stylised
landscapes. After working in California for many years he has now
returned to live and work in London. He is a truly international
figure with a prominent place in 20th Century art.
