Biography
 

Born Portugal 1935 - received an academic training at the Slade School, London. 1957-63 Lived in Ericeira, Portugal. 1962-63 Bursary from the Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon. 1963-75 Lived in London and Portugal. 1976 Settled permanently in London. 1983 Visiting Lecturer in Painting, Slade School of Art. 1988 Retrospective Exhibition, Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; Serpentine Gallery, London. 1990 Appointed the first National Gallery Associate Artist. 1991-96 Nursery Rhymes exhibition toured internationally by South Bank Centre, British Council and Marlborough Graphics. 1992 Publication of Peter Pan suite of etchings. Television documentary, Paula Rego for South Bank Show, London Weekend Television. Nursery Rhymes and Peter Pan suite of etchings shown at Charles Nodrum Gallery, October/November, 1995; Annandale Galleries, Sydney. 1996 Publication of Pendle Witches suite of etchings. Shown at Charles Nodrum Gallery, August, 1997. 1997 Retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool; Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon. 1998 Solo exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery. 1999 Publication of The Children's Crusade suite of etchings. Galeria Marlborough, Madrid. O Crime do Padre Amaro, Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon.
